Robert Colbert

After BTW, I attended Brandeis High School.
I graduated in 1980, earning that all mighty H.S diploma.
I had no clue what I wanted to do next. Coincidently, while in the waiting room of the guidance counselor's office, I overheard one of my friends (Eddie Laureano), say that he wanted to attend City College and major in Computer Science. So without any prior thought of it, I decided I would say the same exact thing. So I entered City in 1980, unprepared for the level of commitment and my GPA suffered because of it. I actually had to study to pass. Whoa! Unfortunately I got caught up in the new hip-hop craze of the late 70's. I wasted a lot of time running the streets with my crew, rapping, and dodging bullets. Believe it! Academic probation was my wake up call, ...well that and jailed running mates. So I got serious, matured a bit, and swapped my rap crew for a study crew. After six long years, I earned that B.S in Computer Science. I bolted Harlem for Connecticut and worked as a programmer/analyst for the Connecticut phone company for 7 years. During this period, I attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and earned an Masters in Financial Services. The left the phone company to develop a trading firm founded by myself and Six partners from City College, to which I became Pres/CEO. We used our technical prowess learned in school to attempt to manager institutional assets using computer programs that we wrote. We eventually opened a small hedge fund called the Nile Valley Futures Fund L.P and sold private units to it. The fund was operating for about two years before we closed it, due to losses and limited operating capital. I then joined Bankers Trust and left there 3 years later as a V.P. I have since been working as a technology consultant with Lehman Brothers. I develop systems used by the traders on their Equity Derivatives desk. I thought I had seen a lot living in Harlem for 24 years, until September 11th. I worked on the 40th floor of Tower 1, but chose to go in late that morning, i.e 9:00 AM. I was across the street watching Tower 1 burn, as Tower 2 exploded. The rest is history. Married for 5 years with a 3 year old son Malik and a step son Harry, who is 15.
